The Boston Celtics were formed in 1946 by Boston Garden-Arena Corporation President Walter A. Brown as a team in the Basketball Association of America, and became part of the National Basketball Association (NBA) after the merger of the BAA and the National Basketball League in the fall of 1949. In 1950, the Celtics became the first franchise to draft an African American player, signing Chuck Cooper. In 1951 Brown, who was one of the founders of the Ice Capades in 1940, bought the Boston Bruins National Hockey League franchise as well, when the founder Charles Adams’ son Weston faced financial trouble. Brown was looking to fill the Boston Garden when the Celtics had a night off or were on the road. Boston Celtics legendary run in the NBA roots started in the early 50′s. Red Auerbach was hired to coach, scout, recruit, draft, manage the Celtics. One of the first pieces that fell into place was Bob Cousy, followed by the 2nd over all draft pic of Bill Russell. With these two in place the championships started to pile. A Dynasty spread through the 60, 70, 80′s Tommy Heinsolm , K.C Jones, some guy named John Havlicek led the Celtics SnapBack wearers to 10 championships. The Celtics had some lean years and lived through the death of draft choice Len Bias, and all star Reggie Lewis. Not until the arrival of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garrett,Ray Allen and Rondo Rajon along with Coach Doc Rivers did a championship come back to bean town. 17 championship banners hang in the Boston gym, there is only a couple franchises with more.
