Atlanta Hawks Snapback Hat
It was a setting made for Mark Twain. A banjo box gymnasium called Wharton Field House seating 6,000 on hardwood benches in a city, or should we say three cities, straddling the Mississippi River is where the Atlanta Hawks have their roots. They were known as the Tri-City Blackhawks, one of the original members of the National Basketball Association after a midsummer merger in 1949 of the 12-year-old National Basketball League and the four-year-old Basketball Association of America formed the new league. The Illinois cities of Moline and Rock Island and Davenport, Iowa across the river formed the formal name of the neophyte Blackhawks, coached by Roger Potter. In the opening game at Wharton Field House, the Blackhawks beat the old Denver Nuggets, 93-85. But after a string of six losses, Potter became the first former coach of the franchise, as he was replaced by Red Auerbach. The first edition of the Blackhawks made the playoffs, despite being six games under .500, but dropped out in the first round to the Anderson Duffey Packers. Then the coach, better known as Red Auerbach, left for Boston and many green-and-white World Championship banners. Two years after joining the league the Blackhawks moved to Milwaukee and shorted their name to Hawks. In 54 they drafted Bob Pettit and started their run of playoff basketball. In 55 the team moved to St Louis where in 58 the team won its only NBA championship. Pettit,Hagen,Martin, Share, and Macauley had a great run through the end of the 50′s and into the 60′s. Losing several times to the Boston Celtics in the championship series. By 66 the roster had change over to Sweet Lou Hudsen, Beaty,Caldwell, Wilkens and Bridges. In 68 a move to Atlanta brought the first NBA team into the deep south. Early 70 saw the magic that was Pistol Pete Maravich with his passing and dribbling ability. By 77 Ted Turner with Turner Broadcasting had purchased the team and lead them through average record years. The 80′s saw Dominique Wilkins lead his team into the playoff chase. The like of Spud Webb, Augmon, Blaylock played part of their careers there. The 90′s brought more lean years with continues line up changes. Finally in 04 Atlanta Spirit emerged out of a Turner Broadcasting Imelda Warner merger. Johnson, Bibby, Hortford, lead the team to playoff runs always ending short of the championship
